Becoming a Motion Designer 2/18/20: Introduction

General / 18 February 2020

Hello, I am Kenneth Olson, I am enrolled in The Ohio State University studying at ACCAD. I am a first-year student working towards an MFA in Design with Emphasis in Digital Animation and Interactive Media (DAIM). More broadly, I am working towards becoming a motion designer in hopes to one day work professionally within the realms of film, television, or live theatre. With an Undergraduate Degree, from Dakota State University, in Digital Art and Design with a Specialization in Production Animation; I have acquired a basic understanding of design elements and principles, the 3D animation pipeline, and gained experience in programs such as Autodesk Maya, Adobe Photoshop, and After Effects. Since graduating from my undergraduate program, I have worked regionally at the Black Hills Playhouse in Custer State Park as a stagecraft intern. Currently, I am diving into emerging technologies such as Vicon motion capture systems and projection mapping; hoping to branch out into virtual and augmented reality, volumetric capture, and group interactive system design. I understand the theatre design world is secretive, and the knowledge a motion designer should have is seemingly overwhelming; but in this blog, I will be showing my process, resources, and progress towards becoming a full-time motion designer. I don't know everything and could use all the help and feedback as I can get. Hopefully, this documentation will help others, and in return, we can all support each other.
